Ocracoke Harbour Panorama

A panoramic shot of Ocracoke Harbour, Ocracoke Island, North Carolina, USA, also known as Silver Lake. The building on the far right is the former U.S. Coast Guard Station, now decommissioned and converted to a teachers' training school. The ferries are the Cedar Island and Swan Quarter Ferries, which transport cars and trucks back and forth to the NC mainland. The ferries are still working over-time to make up for the damage by Hurricane Irene to the only highway leading to the ferry landing at the North end of the Island (Hwy. 12), which is still closed (Sept. 18, 2011).
Still dominated by local and commercial fishing when I was growing up, making yearly summer visits to my grandmother's cottage, the major trade is tourism now, with fewer and fewer original "Ocracokers" left. This is the off-season of early spring.
